Drawing from such metaphysical sources as Rene Daumal’s Mount Analogue and Ascent of Mt. Carmel, The Holy Mountain is perhaps Alejandro Jodorowsky’s most spiritual – and most psychedelic – work. Rather than a straightforward plot, The Holy Mountain is a visual poem of sorts incorporating Jodorowsky’s obsession with the Tarot and mysticism, both Eastern and Western.
Even if you don’t buy into the philosophy, it’s a trip worth taking as the visuals are perhaps the most stunning of his entire career. It should come as no surprise that Jodorowsky directed the film under the influence of some pretty heavy mind-altering substances; not content to merely medicate his own brain, Jodorowsky also took the liberty of dosing his cast members with psilocybin. The result is a trippy, surreal journey that buries itself in your subconscious in the best way possible.
